Analysis Of The Starrry Night Painting By Vincent Van Gogh

The first four sources I will be using are related to â€Å"The Starry Night† painting from Vincent van Gogh. The first source, located on MOMA Learning, is titled Vincent van Gogh: The Starry Night, 1889† which does not appear to have an author or publication date. The MOMA Learning article provides insights into the interpretations of the artwork, including insights into Van Gogh’s mental state at the time that the painting. Additionally, the article provides relevant information regarding the post-impressionists use of their art as a way to express their emotions and â€Å"psychological responses to the world through bold colors and expressive, often symbolic images† (MOMA Learning, n.d.). What once was seen as the eroding force of class divisions has sadly become the reason for its fortification. What does that mean? Not enough dollars are going towards what matters most: education. The Bush’s administration’s 2007 budget proposed the largest cut to federal education funding since the twenty-six years of existence for the Education Department—a loss of $2. 1 billion. This cut meant that schools and colleges throughout the nation had to compete more than ever for proper funding from the government, both at the state and federal level. As resources are being stripped from schools, struggling students will only continue to struggle, while students with money and resources continue to add on to the legacy that has preceded them. This information does not include another economic sector that has made it difficult for students to access higher education, the ever-growing cost of college tuition. â€Å"College tuition has increased 66% beyond inflation within the last ten years, and 26% at private institutions†. Higher education was looked at to further the knowledge of our nation’s citizens, to expand and better what we had, but due to the difficulty of accessing it, all we continue to do is increase the gap of class stratification. Gary Rhoades of the Center of the Future of Higher Education stated, â€Å"Our current policy path, of continued cuts in state support and continued increases in tuition will only increase the stratification in the future†. This is an adverse trend, as our nation is in dire demand for more educated graduates and workers, not fewer. Yet, policymakers continue to steer their focus away from increasing access to schools, and making it that much harder for students who struggle already. In the world we live in today, money is the motive and the drive. Elementary and post secondary schools with a high property tax are two linked reasons for the inequality of education. Schools rely heavenly on property tax revenue using as much as half for funding. A report done by Daphne A. Kenyon, a member at the Lincoln Institute, displayed the correlation of property tax and school funding of seven states: California, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Texas, Ohio, New Jersey, and Michigan, with â€Å"Massachusetts ranks the highest and California the lowest, according to the respective property tax relief and school funding principles presented in the reports. This report associates itself with the most educated states in the country, with Massachusetts being one of the most educated and California being one the lowest. Giving you an idea how this source of revenue actually helps the students in the long run, getting a higher quality of education, as schools are able to buy more materials for the classrooms, and pay for workshops which could impro ve teachers. Educational value depends on the educational spending in students and institutions, as does the quality. This inequality for students enforces class stratification, as students who receive better quality of teaching throughout their academic career, will be better prepared for colleges and universities and the workforce ahead. As these students leave a form of legacy behind them in their alma mater, access for their children will be easier, as children with parents who’ve attended college are more likely to go than those with parents who have not. Unfortunately for those who receive poor quality education, their mobility will be limited than what it should be, ignoring general income as a factor. Students with lower income have always trailed behind their affluent colleagues in school performance, not saying that they cannot advance, but the way the system is being operated against them. Universities have grown selective in their admission process, aiming towards students with higher incomes, as they contribute and pay more than those with lower income. A trend that has continued to grow and debated about is the acceptance of out-of-states students over in-states students. Populated states with tight higher education budgets have grown to rely on out-of-state students due to their higher tuition payments to help sustain the schools. Another issue that universities and institutions present is the administration blight. A 2010 study has shown that administrators have grown 39% per 100 students compared to professors, researchers, and other staff members, who have only grown 18% per 100 students. Schools need more professors and researchers, not administrators, who make an average of $390,000 a year. This steers universities’ mission away from providing a proper education and more and giving those in higher power more power. Full time professors and researchers are being replaced, and do not have time to perform research to further the advancement of knowledge. Despite the numbers flown around everywhere, what you earn from a college degree is in fact beneficial to a person. Those with a post secondary education will genuinely earn a bout 64% more than someone with just a high school degree or a drop out ($1053 vs. 638 earned a month). The earning gap in today’s society has been the highest since 1915, and in today’s economy, you need to have that stable income to be ready for whatever policies and laws and raises in tax rates that the country might throw at you. So attending college will definitely have it’s advantage, most of the times. Although attaining and completing your post secondary education, the work field will not always guarantee you a job solely due to a degree. Post secondary education has taken it share of hits from legislators and policymakers, but this should not affect the access for students who are working hard to achieve a better future for themselves and potential families to come. Chaucers General Prologue Essay Example For Students

Chaucers General Prologue Essay Compare and contrast the presentation of three pilgrims from Chaucers General Prologue and show how their descriptions add to our understanding of his society  The Canterbury Tales is a group of tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer in about 1387. Chaucer planned to write 24 tales but died before he could complete them, so, The Canterbury Tales consist of 22 verse tales and two long prose tales. The General Prologue gives a brief but vivid description of each pilgrim journeying to Canterbury before the pilgrims actually begin telling their tales. Most literature written in the medieval period was written in either French or Latin, especially poems or Holy Scriptures, so when Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales in Middle English he was making a statement. Chaucer wanted to promote the vernacular language of England and so wrote The Canterbury Tales in Middle English. Three of the best portraits of the pilgrims in the General Prologue are of the Knight, the Wife of Bath and the Monk who all tell us a great deal about Chaucers society. The Knight is a verray, parfit, gentil knyght, who earns his living by fighting for his faith and his king. He has high status in the feudal system and Ful worthy was he in his lordes werre. He is as meeke as a mayde, and he is also worthy and humble.  The way in which Chaucer writes The Knight and the language he uses reinforces the point that the Knight is virtuous. The alliteration in he were worthy, he was wys draws attention to the praise that Chaucer is giving him. Also triple negatives are used to reinforce the point that he has no vices; he nevere yet no vileynye ne sayde. The Knight is humble and not materialistic where the text reads;  His hors were goode, but he was nat gay  Of fustian he wered a gypon  Al bismotered with his habergeon  There is also an ironic simile in the verse about the Knight where the text says, as meeke as a mayde this describes him as calm and gentle whereas we expect a Knight to be violent and proud of himself. Finally, the rhyming couplets at the end of each line draw even more attention to his good qualities for example  . prys  . wys  He does not care what people think of him, he uses his horse for its function, and he does not decorate it elaborately but just uses it for fighting. The clothes that he wears also tell the reader that he is not materialistic because he, wered a gypon/Al bismotered with his habergeon. The Wife of Bath lives biside Bathe and likes to weave, she has been married five times and gives advice to people in love. Thries hadde she been at Jerusalem, which suggests that she is a holy woman who has been on a lot of pilgrimages. However she only wants to be seen as religious and holy person. Chaucer only pretends to give evidence of her devotion whereas he is really saying that she is not concerned about religion, but that she is more concerned with her reputation and how she looks to other people; Nobody to the offrynge before hire sholde goon. Although she had been on a number of pilgrimages, especially to Jerusalem, Chaucer writes that she is often found wandrynge by the weye on them, passing many a strange strem. The alliteration here draws our attention to these details. Chaucers ambiguity towards some pilgrims motives for being on the pilgrimage is shown in this verse as he could be implying that the Wife of Bath strayed from the religious purpose of the trip.  Chaucer uses euphemisms to hint at the Wife of Baths promiscuity; gat-tothed, reed stockings, five husbands and oother compaigne in her youth are all quotes to support this point. The Friar knew a lot of the taverns in the country which suggests he has a lot of time for social time which a monk should not have.  Christians go to Canterbury to worship the shrine of St Thomas Beckett who was murdered at Canterbury. In the General Prologue, the characters met up at the Tabard Inn and decided to tell their stories. The supposed reason these pilgrims are going to Canterbury is to seek St. Thomas, holy martyr blessed, but some have other ulterior motives for going there. The Knight, I think, is on the pilgrimage to give thanks to God and St. Thomas Beckett for bringing him back alive and well from battle. The Wife of Bath likes to show off about being holy since nobody to the offrynge before hire sholde goon. She could be going to Canterbury for a holiday, to travel more, to find another husband, to show off how rich she is; compared with The Knight she is on the pilgrimage for materialistic reasons whereas the Knight, like the Parson, is on the pilgrimage for authentic religious reasons. A Fourth Reich? A Fourth Reich? Is the idea of a recurrence of the Holocaust realistic, or is this just an empty threat? According to Roskin, the Holocaust, or A Fourth Reich, is possible, but most likely improbable. He says the Neo-Nazi groups being formed in Germany at this time are nothing to be concerned with because they will never re-establish the power that Hitler once possessed. As for me, I disagree with some of this. History is known to repeat itself, which invites the possibility of a recurrence of this massacre. If ten years before the Holocaust occurred, you would have told me that millions of Jews would be killed, I would have thought that you were crazy. When or if this does happen again, it would never reach the magnitude it once did in Germany, simply because today people all around the globe are aware of what happens in every country. Roskin expels two excellent reasons as to why this would not occur in Germany. First, he notes that the Neo-Nazi groups causing this debate are no real threat. These groups, primarily located in Eastern Germany, are comprised of young uneducated citizens, who do not know how to gain power. These kids are simply playing with Hitler's ideas, not necessarily trying to follow Hitler's accomplishments, if you can call what he did an accomplishment! These kids like to go from neighborhood to neighborhood and threaten citizens, so that they feel powerful. The only threat posed upon German people is that which a bully presents to a smaller classmate, one of fear! Another point offered by Roskin is that increasing German democratic values are stronger than ever. Germany is finally becoming respected throughout the world because of their efforts towards democracy, and the German people are beginning to become attached to there lives in a democratic world. They are content with their present government, therefore, they will never allow for a shift in power! The German people have contributed their lives to this new government, and are not about to allow a small political party, such as the Neo-Nazis to gain popular opinion. As long as the Germans remain economically stable, they will have no reason to look to the Neo-Nazi party for leadership. There is one group in particular which not many people know about, and which people who do know about attempt to block out of their minds in hope that they will go away! This group is an older, well-educated, and well-organized Neo-Nazi party. These citizens are ex-political leaders and powerful figures in the eyes of the German public that are influential over the vote. While they have not acted just yet, this group has the potential to breakout. If any group can threaten to establish a Fourth Reich this group is the one to watch out for! If in fact this group was able to establish power, the results would never amount to that of what happened in WWII. No one country could ever separate itself from the rest of the world long enough to gain the power needed to eliminate so many people. If anything, a small third world country could experience what happened in Germany during WWII. It would never last though because other countries, such as the United States, would interfere. This is reassuring that our world has been so affected by what happened in Germany years ago that countries are looking out for one another against such leaders. In conclusion, one could say it is improbable that this could happen again in Germany or anywhere else for that matter. People of today have lived through the results of what happened in the Holocaust and so are safe from these radical groups because they would never allow for a power such as this to enter the wrong hands! The Principles Of Life In Frankensteins Gothic Horror English Literature Essay The story of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is an unforgettable gothic horror story. Written by Mary Godwin Shelley while staying at Lake Geneva, in Switzerland, Frankenstein was inspired by a vivid dream that she had after hearing a conversation about science and the origins of life. In this dream she saw a hideous phantasm of a man stretched out (Querna) and a scientist trying to bring him to life. Thus, the sub-title The Modern Prometheus leads the reader to relate the story to the Greek myth that Prometheus a Greek god stole fire and gave it to mankind (Cohen); it was believed that Prometheus was responsible for the creation of man. In Frankenstein Victor Frankenstein is responsible for creating the monster causing the public to view him as the mad scientist (Shelley 302). This gothic horror Frankenstein is known as more than a bookà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦..it is a myth and a symbol and inspires an undisclosed secret (315), the principal of life. Mary Shelley uses many themes to give us a v ivid view of the different aspects of life including: humanity, creation and morality. Curiosity is shown in the passage of the story narrated by the monster. The monster is curious about the world around him. As he talks to Victor, he demands Victor as his creator to hear his tale (67). The monster describes some of this curiosity when he tells of his happiness at the discovery of many things in nature including the trees and the clear stream and was delighted when I first discovered that a pleasant sound, which often saluted by ears, proceeded from the throats of the little winged animals (68-69). Thus, his description shows the innocent curiosity of his life and the things he finds around him. He spent many hours watching the family in the cottage learning about their beauty and grace, the way they lived and loved (77-80). The love portrayed throughout Frankenstein also shows humanity. The monster, in his quest to learn about life learns about love from the family in the shack of the De Laceys. Shelley portrays the creature in a way that makes the reader feel sorry for him. He lives alone in a deserted shack fascinated by the closeness and the actions they show to each other including the gentle manners and beauty (75). He learns to read, speak and write during this time. He develops an evident compassion and learns to love the family. He in his kindness and love for the family decides it hurts them if he eats their food because it causes them to go hungry (75). He also realizes it helps them if he gathers their wood. He develops such a love for them that he becomes convinced in his thinking that they would compassionate me, and overlook my personal deformity (88). Shelley suggests that the monster had a great capacity to love as shown in the admiration of the De Lacey family. The monster is sadly disa ppointed when he is rejected and becomes angry learning that he cannot be accepted by society. At this point he again becomes alone and isolated from the world. Isolation is another form of humanity shown by Mary Shelley. The first instance of isolation is apparent when Victor Frankenstein separates himself from his family. He spends hours of his time absorbed in his work and seems to forget his family (33) not even taking the time to reply to his father. The isolation is realized by the monster while observing the cottagers. It is at this point that he decides to reveal himself to the family thinking they will accept him. This starts out well as the old man cant see well. However, it quickly becomes chaotic as the family returns home; they are frightened by his appearance and attack him and dash him to the ground and strike him violently with a stick (91). He is once again alone and isolated as he says his protectors had departed, and broken his only link to the world (93). He realizes the prejudice against his physical appearance. These same prejudices exist today putting limits on how one should look. Anything not considered as what we ca ll normal creates limits on the person that is different. I am sure these misfits in life also feel hurts and torments just as the monster did. Shelley wrote the monster at this point couldnt understand his being and his thoughts went back to his father, his creator (94) the one that had given him life (94). He couldnt understand why he had lived and thus cursed his creator (91). Creation is another theme used by Mary Shelley. Victor Frankenstein spends hour upon hour in his lab working to bring to life a form he develops from the body parts of dead people and live animals. In The Landscape of Grief in Mary Shelleys Frankenstein by Matthew Brennan it is suggested that Frankenstein is Mary Shelleys way of dealing with the death of her mother and her child. Mary Shelley herself had fantasies of resurrecting the dead. After her first, nameless infant died, she dreamed of animating it (3). Mary used Victors obsession as a parallel to her thinking as his sole motivation becomes the infantile desire to animate the dead. This theme of creation matches the fantasy and dreams (Brennan) she has had about bringing the dead people in her family back to life. Shelleys description of how Victor creates his creature is close in resemblance to a human birth. She calls Victors lab a workshop of filthy creation (Shelley 32) indicating this could be the uterus. Shelley also use s the amount of time it takes for a baby to grow Winter, spring and summer passed away during my labours (page 33) suggesting he is taking the place of a women. The creation of Victors human and the animation to life suggests that reproduction would become unnecessary. This creation breaks the normal family structure. Victor also takes on the idea of being a God he thinks: a new species would bless me as its creator and source (32) and implies that the creature would owe him gratification. Upon the accomplishment of his toils he quickly realized that the beauty of his dreams vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart (Shelley 34). His ideas of being a God quickly change when he realizes how ugly his creation is. He then abandons the poor creature refusing to be the father figure that he might have been and alienates himself from society and from the creature. He goes into a state of panic and shock and commences into a state of nervous fear for several months (Shell ey 36). He then spends the following time in the story being tormented by the monster he has created. He thinks he sees the dreaded spectre glide into the room and imagines the monster has seized him (Shelley 37). Upon learning of the murder of his brother Victor travels toward home. During a very violent storm he sees in the gloom a figure, its gigantic stature, and the deformity of its aspect, more hideous than belongs to humanity, instantly informed me that it was the wretch, the filthy daemon to whom I had given life (48). Wherever Victor goes the monster follows him. The monster finally approaches the scientist demanding that you must create a female for me, with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being. This you alone can do; and I demand it of you as a right which you must not refuse (98). He threatens Victor for breaking his promise of the creation of a mate. You are my creator, but I am your masterobey! (Shelley 116) he commands to Victo r or I shall be with you on your wedding night the scientist would have seized him, but he eluded him and left the house (Shelley 116). Victor Frankenstein breaks his promise to the monster when he starts questioning the moral issue of creating a second being. The question of morality plays a very important role in Frankenstein. Victor Frankenstein took on the role of God when he assumed the capability of bestowing animation upon lifeless manner ( ). Thus, bringing up the question of what is morally correct. In Frankenstein Victor in trying to create life and take Gods place. It seems Victor loses his sense of morality in his quest to find the knowledge of the secrets of the universe. Also, in his creation of the monster, all of the body parts are stolen from the unhallowed damps of the grave and he has no fear of disturbing the dead. He also gets parts from the torture of living animals (32). Victor Frankensteins loss of morals and ethics bring up the factor of the forbidden and the punishment that comes when a person crosses into this area. In the story of Adam and Eve, they were expelled from the garden because of the forbidden fruit. Victor Frankenstein in this myth crosses into forbidden areas as this tale of a man who overstepped the bounds of what we should know, created life, and then was punished by having his monstrous creation turn on him in the most horrible way (Cohen). This brings up the question also of what is ethically correct. In The Circle of Friends at the Villa Diodai by Mary Shelley, the story assumed mythic dimensions as it addressed profound implications concerning mans understanding of transgressing against God and Nature(add page number if available). He gets into a moral battle in his mind realizing the possibility of being rid of his creation if he commits another moral sin and creates another one or the possibility they could become twice the amount of a problem (Shelley 114). It is at this time he decided to act morally. He destroys the second creation that he is in the process of assembling (Shelley 115). Mary Shelley upon this moral realization suddenly calls him the good doctor, trying to act morally, destroys the monster for the good of the world (Cohen). The Signalman by Charles Dickens, The Adventure of the Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman People have written short stories for hundreds of years; however it was not until the 19th century that they really became popular. Short stories were the ideal form for writers who wanted to earn some immediate money and reach a wide audience. As more people were given the chance of receiving basic education, literacy rates improved and more were able to enjoy reading. As the technology improved printing became cheaper meaning that more people could afford to buy and read cheap magazines. This was in the days before television or radio when reading aloud was a much more popular form of entertainment. I have chosen to look at three short stories which were written in the Victorian age by different authors. They are â€Å"The Signalman† by Charles Dickens, â€Å"The Adventure of the Speckled Band† by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The story â€Å"The Signalman† takes place in an isolated railway cutting, where a traveller meets and befriends a lonely signalman who has a strange tale to tell. He is being haunted by a mysterious figure that lurks in the mouth of a rail tunnel, warning him of impending tragedy. He has appeared twice before and on both occasions the signalman witnessed terrible accidents; a train crash and a young bride falling from a speeding carriage. The signalman fears that the figure will return and some other tragedy will occur. Charles Dickens wrote this tale after being involved in a train wreck in which he narrowly escaped injury. The accident haunted him for the rest of his life. â€Å"The Yellow Wa... ... next? What will happen to her? The woman in â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† is very untypical of the normal subject in a psychological thriller. She at first seems to be a perfectly normal woman not really ill at all, but gradually we see her mind deteriorate and she slowly turns into a creature resembling a wild animal, prowling around her bedroom. â€Å"The Signalman† bears some similarities to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s story in that there is a definite ending when the signalman is killed. There is a difference however in that the reader is then left with a question in their mind, which is similar to â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†. Is the narrator of the story a normal person or is he possibly the ghost? This is the typical ending of a mystery story; leaving the reader with a quandary to ponder over after they have finished reading, making them want to read it all over again.

Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812 The Battle of Fort McHenry was fought September 13/14, 1814, during the War of 1812 (1812-1815). Part of the larger Battle of Baltimore, the Battle of Fort McHenry saw the forts garrison defeat a British fleet that had been advancing on the city. As the British had recently captured and burned Washington, DC, the victory proved critical in halting their advance in the Chesapeake. Coupled with successes elsewhere, the victory strengthened the hand of American negotiators at the Ghent peace talks. Francis Scott Key saw the fighting from a British ship where he was held prisoner and was inspired to write the Star-Spangled Banner based on what he had witnessed. Into the Chesapeake Having defeated Napoleon in early 1814 and removed the French emperor from power, the British were able to turn their full attention to the war with the United States. A secondary conflict while the wars with France were ongoing, they now commenced sending additional troops west in an effort to achieve a swift victory. While Lieutenant General Sir George Prevost, the governor-general of Canada and commander of British forces in North America, commenced a series of campaigns from the north, he ordered Vice Admiral Alexander Cochrane, the commander of the Royal Navys ships on the North American Station, to make attacks against the American coast. Though Cochranes second-in-command, Rear Admiral George Cockburn, had been raiding up and down the Chesapeake Bay for some time, additional forces were en route. Arriving in August, Cochranes reinforcements included a force of around 5,000 men commanded by Major General Robert Ross. Many of these soldiers were veterans of the Napoleonic Wars and had served under the Duke of Wellington. On August 15, the transports carrying Ross command entered the Chesapeake and sailed up the bay to join with Cochrane and Cockburn. Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane. Public Domain Reviewing their options, the three men elected to mount an attack on Washington DC. The combined fleet then moved up the bay and quickly trapped Commodore Joshua Barneys gunboat flotilla in the Patuxent River. Pushing up the river, they destroyed Barneys force and put Rosss 3,400 men and 700 marines ashore on August 19. In Washington, President James Madisons administration worked fruitlessly to deal with the threat. Not thinking that the capital would be a target, little work had been done in regard to constructing defenses. Overseeing the troops around Washington was Brigadier General William Winder, a political appointee from Baltimore who had been captured at the Battle of Stoney Creek in June 1813. Since the majority of the US Armys regulars were occupied on the Canadian frontier, Winder s force was largely made up of militia. Burning Washington Marching from Benedict to Upper Marlborough, the British decided to approach Washington from the northeast and cross the East Branch of the Potomac at Bladensburg. On August 24, Ross engaged an American force under Winder at the Battle of Bladensburg. Achieving a decisive victory, later dubbed the Bladensburg Races due to the nature of the American retreat, his men occupied Washington that evening. Taking possession of the city, they burned the Capitol, Presidents House, and Treasury Building before encamping. Additional destruction ensued the next day before they departed to rejoin the fleet.  Following their successful campaign against Washington DC, Cochrane and Ross advanced up the Chesapeake Bay to attack Baltimore, MD. British forces burning Washington, DC, 1814. Public Domain A vital port city, Baltimore was believed by the British to be the base of many of the American privateers that were preying on their shipping. To take the city, Ross and Cochrane planned a two-prong attack with the former landing at North Point and advancing overland, while the latter attacked Fort McHenry and the harbor defenses by water. Fighting at North Point On September 12, 1814, Ross landed with 4,500 men on the tip of North Point and began advancing northwest towards Baltimore. His men soon encountered American forces under Brigadier General John Stricker. Dispatched by Major General Samuel Smith, Stricker was under orders to delay the British while the fortifications around the city were completed. In the resulting Battle of North Point, Ross was killed and his command took heavy losses. These were anchored on the star-shaped Fort McHenry. Situated on Locust Point, the fort guarded the approaches to the Northwest Branch of the Patapsco which led to the city as well as the Middle Branch of the river. Fort McHenry was supported across the Northwest Branch by a battery at Lazaretto and by Forts Covington and Babcock to the west on the Middle Branch. At Fort McHenry, the garrison commander, Major George Armistead possessed a composite force of around 1,000 men. Bombs Bursting in Air Early on September 13, Brooke began advancing towards the city along the Philadelphia Road. In the Patapsco, Cochrane was hampered by shallow waters which precluded sending forward his heaviest ships. As a result, his attack force consisted of five bomb ketches, 10 smaller warships, and the rocket vessel HMS Erebus. By 6:30 AM they were in position and opened fire on Fort McHenry. Remaining out of range of Armisteads guns, the British ships struck the fort with heavy mortar shells (bombs) and Congreve rockets from Erebus. Advancing ashore, Brooke, who believed they had defeated citys defenders the day before, was stunned when his men found 12,000 Americans behind substantial earthworks east of the city. Under orders not to attack unless with a high chance of success, he began probing Smiths lines but was unable to find a weakness. As a result, he was forced to hold his position and await the outcome of Cochranes assault on the harbor. Early in the afternoon, Rear Admiral George Cockburn, thinking the fort had been badly damaged, moved the bombardment force closer increase the effectiveness of their fire. Defense of Fort McHenry, 1814. Public Domain As the ships closed, they came under intense fire from Armisteads guns and were compelled to draw back to their original positions. In effort to break the stalemate, the British attempted to move around the fort after dark. Embarking 1,200 men in small boats, they rowed up the Middle Branch. Mistakenly thinking they were safe, this assault force fired signal rockets which gave away their position. As a result, they quickly came under an intense crossfire from Forts Covington and Babcock. Taking heavy losses, the British withdrew. The Flag Was Still There By dawn, with the rain subsiding, the British had fired between 1,500 and 1,800 rounds at the fort with little impact. The greatest moment of danger had come when a shell struck the forts unprotected magazine but had failed to explode. Realizing the potential for disaster, Armistead had the forts gunpowder supply distributed to safer locations. As the sun began to rise, he ordered the forts small storm flag lowered and replaced with the standard garrison flag measuring 42 feet by 30 feet. Sewn by local seamstress Mary Pickersgill, the flag was clearly visible to all of the ships in the river. The sight of the flag and the ineffectiveness of the 25-hour bombardment convinced Cochrane that the harbor could not be breached. Ashore, Brooke, with no support from the navy, decided against a costly attempt on the American lines and began retreating towards North Point where his troops re-embarked. Aftermath The attack on Fort McHenry cost Armisteads garrison 4 killed and 24 wounded. British losses were around 330 killed, wounded, and captured, most of which occurred during the ill-fated attempt to move up the Middle Branch. The successful defense of Baltimore coupled with victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh aided in restoring American pride after the burning of Washington DC and bolstered the nations bargaining position at the Ghent peace talks. Detained aboard the ship Minden, Key had gone to meet with the British to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes who had been arrested during the attack on Washington. Having overhead the British attack plans, Key was forced to remain with the fleet for the duration of the battle. Moved to write during the forts heroic defense, he composed the words to an old drinking song entitled To Anacreon in Heaven. Initially published after the battle as the Defense of Fort McHenry, it eventually became known as the Star-Spangled Banner and was made the National Anthem of the United States.
